A bora wind, blowing from the north down the Adriatic Sea, had cleared the skies over northeast Italy when the Challenger crossed the coast on a descending pass. The coastal current, as usual, spread the discharge from the Po River to the south in well-defined, light brown plumes, reflecting the mainly calcareous rocks in the Po's drainage basin. Venice generally remains free of the river's sediments, as shown on this day, the main contribution to its lagoon coming from the small rivers to the north. |
